A SILIENT VIGIL FOR PEACE is held EVERY SATURDAY NOON-1PM
at the corner of  Elmwood Avenue and  Bidwell Parkway

 Background

Women in Black (WIB) is a worldwide network of women committed to peace with justice and is actively opposed to war and other forms of violence. Our demonstrations take the form of women (and men who support us) wearing black, standing in a public place in silent, non-violent vigils at regular times. WIB starts in Israel in 1988 by women protesting Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and demanding peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The idea soon spread to Italy, the Balkans (the former Yugoslavia), Spain, Germany, England, Mexico, Canada, and in many U.S. cities. WIB received the Millennium Peace Prize from UNIFEM and International Alert in March 2001 and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize the same year.

Now BUFFALO joins in this international network. Women in Black in Buffalo started holding vigils in October 2001 to protest the bombing of Afghanistan. We are a presence for peace and proof that there are many who oppose the current spread of military actions by the U.S. As one of our posters states, "Dissent is democratic".
